Scholarship
We train young artists for a professional life as singers, young musicians and participants in other stagecraft professions associated with opera. The training is based on the principle of learning by doing with more time for reflection and more support than in a normal opera production on the country's major stages. They all participate as scholarship students guided by experienced professionals.

The mixed repertory of new commissions and old forgotten but great and seldom performed operas is part of our pedagogical idea. As a result, everything at Vadstena-Akademien becomes new – for the artists and for the audiences.
We stimulate all these young professionals within opera to grow and develop. We let them experience professional work under intense pressure with a focus on cooperation and an utterly professional, high-quality result.
We recruit leaders – directors, set designers, conductors, musical coaches, choreographers, first-chairs, wardrobe managers, chief make-up artists and others – who, in addition to their exceptional professional skills, also have teaching skills and a deep interest in conveying their knowledge to younger generations.
We ensure that every participant is methodically involved throughout the rehearsal period, which takes place on site in Vadstena at Vadstena Castle and Vadstena Old Theatre. These historic environments, the beauty of the location, the small town, the peace and quiet are also important for the result.
We always add extra value to the rehearsal process to strengthen the learning processes further. This can include anything from concerts, seminars, and many workshops to collaborations with other institutions, orchestras, et cetera. We are thorough in our evaluations of various kinds for all our scholarship students.
During the summer in Vadstena a very tight-knit community arises among all participants and the understanding for opera as an all-embracing art form increases significantly. Doing well at Vadstena-Akademien often means a great deal for one's future career since agents also attend the performances and the media coverage is intense.
