Welcome to a hothouse for the art of opera!
The International Vadstena Academy may be Sweden's smallest opera house, but when it comes to replenishing the opera repertory it is the country’s greatest institution. So far the Vadstena Academy has commissioned and staged 33 new operas and nearly 50 undeservedly lost operas dug out of antique manuscripts. We give both the participants and the audience the chance to encounter operas that are not part of the mainstream repertoire. As the icing on the cake, we do this in the absolutely fantastically environments of Vadstena Castle and the Old Theatre in the pittoresque medieval town of Vadstena, Sweden.
The past summer we staged a new Swedish opera "Stolthet och fördom" (Pride and Prejudice), based upon the beloved novel by Jane Austen. The music was composed by Daniel Nelson and the text was written by Sofia Fredén.
